January 19, 2010
The Youth Leadership Initiative at the University of Virginia Center for Politics is proud to announce that the 2010 session of e-Congress is now open.
Thousands of student legislators from across the nation will be participating in this online legislative simulation during which they research, create and debate original bills created by themselves and submitted to YLI's classroom committees. This highly popular program of the Youth Leadership Initiative meets state learning standards by asking students not merely to memorize the steps of the process but to experience the process of legislation in Congress firsthand.
Teacher registration began on January 5 with the introductory, research and writing phases opening for students on the same day. In order to participate, teachers must register for e-Congress by
January 20. Teachers may register by logging in with their username and password and following the instructions. If you are not signed up for YLI's free resources already,
sign up now. The simulation will run through April 16th with results being posted on the YLI website April 21st. Teachers and students alike are enthusiastic about this opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
"I feel like I have a real understanding of the legislative process."
-Grade 9 Student, Baltimore, MD
"Thank you for such an exciting experience for my students! This national program has allowed my students to appreciate compromise and criticism. Thank you for providing such a valuable and rewarding program for my students! I look forward to participating again next year."
-Emma Flood, YLI Teacher, Hampton, VA
