These lesson plans may be used in your classroom at the discretion of each
participating teacher. All materials herein remain the copy-written intellectual

 The
Key to John Locke (1.2 MB)
Students will apply their interpretations of John Locke's theories on limited
government, inalienable rights, and the consent of the governed to contemporary
paintings and photographs from artists including Norman Rockwell and Dave Cutler.
Voices
of Activists (285 KB)
Students will examine the writings of activists involved in suffrage movements
to learn how their persuasive arguments impacted public policy. Students will
also demonstrate knowledge of the role of personal character in practicing patriotism,
participating in the political process, and keeping informed about current issues.
What
is Democracy? (242 KB)
The purpose of this lesson is to have students define democracy, its different forms and
its underlying principles. Students will also investigate what makes American democracy unique,
and discover elements of it in political cartoons, music lyrics and a town meeting simulation.
